Filled with larger than life images of human drama and emotion, this book is very exciting to read as it appeals to us, it speaks of our ordinary activities, we are able to appreciate it because we find ourselves in there.
Albom writes in the introduction to this book that the idea for it began with the request by Albert L. Lewis, his childhood rabbi, to write and deliver the eulogy when the time came for the rabbi’s funeral. Albom agreed, contingent on an agreement that he could begin a series of interviews and conversations, in order to get to know Lewis as a man, not just as a rabbi.
The book alternates between his conversations with Lewis, and excerpts from some of his sermons; and Life of Henry, the title of the sections describing his conversations with Covington, and stories about him.
In the beginning, there was a question. It became a last request. “Will you do my eulogy?” And, as is often the case with faith, I thought I was being asked a favor, when in fact I was being given one.”
Albom included a number of Lewis’s many stories, which were used as mini-sermons for his congregation, in the book. One example is this story, delivered in 1981:
A soldier’s little girl, whose father was being moved to a distant post, was sitting at the airport among her family’s meager belongings. The girl was sleepy. She leaned against the packs and duffel bags. A lady came by, stopped, and patted her on the head. “Poor child,” she said. “You haven’t got a home.”
The child looked up in surprise. “But we do have a home,” she said. “We just don’t have a house to put it in.”

The Sojouners’ Companions with Fr Chris Soh SJ as their Spiritual Director is teaming up with Wellsprings to promote a week of guided prayers for busy people who wish to learn to pray effectively within their busyness of the 24-hour day.
Below is the basic structure of the format of the week of guided prayers.
The Week of Guided Prayer begins on a Sunday afternoon. We call this the Taster Afternoon and in this session we teach you, the pilgrim, two methods of praying :
- Ignatian Contemplation – a prayer method as taught by St. Ignatius of Loyola (using your imagination to pray the Scriptures) and the other,
- the Lectio Divina (spiritual reading).
At the close of the Taster Afternoon, pilgrims are assigned their respective prayer guide. On this day, pilgrims will be given the first Scripture text to pray by their respective guide.
Following this, the pilgrim meets with his/her prayer guide at the Church for half an hour every day of that Week (Monday to Friday) to talk about his/her prayer experience based on the Scripture text that was given the day before. The meeting time is mutually agreed upon between pilgrim and guide. This meeting is on a one-to-one basis. All sharing will be treated in the strictest confidence. There are usually 4 time slots for these meetings;
- 9am to 12 pm
- 2pm to 5pm
- 6pm to 8pm
- 8pm to 10pm
The Week closes on the following Saturday afternoon when we gather as a group for general sharing and fellowship.
Please signup if you wish to join to participate. Call Paul Teo – 94508224 for more details.
Taster afternoon – 2 to 4pm 25 March 2012
The Week of Guided Prayer will have a closing session on 31 March 2012 from 2-4pm.
Cost per person is S$30, payable to Sojourners’ Companions. Or you can pay on the day at the event itself. Call Paul for details.

Father Robert Barron takes us on a tour through The Catholicism Project.
What I propose to do in this book is to take you on a guided exploration of the Catholic world but not in the manner of a docent for I am not interested in showing you the artifacts of Catholicism as though they were dusty objets d art in a museum of culture. I want to function rather as a mystagogue conducting you ever deeper into the mystery of the incarnation in the hopes that you might be transformed by its power. Father Robert Barron

In coming here, you would have bought, read and perhaps practised the exercises outlined in the Book – What’s Your Decision? An Ignatian Approach to Making Decision.
How do I make decisions? Do I normally have difficulties – big or small ones? Why do God have to give us the freedom to make choices? Do I sometimes feel tired about praying over my decision-making, especially when both choices seem attractive? Oh God, please tell me…can’t you be more direct and perhaps louder?
In this section, we invite our readers to share with all of us your comments about the book and also your experiences where making choices are concerned. In this way, we can gather some feedback for the planning of the forum based on your expectations and also some burning questions you may have. The forum is to help us all crystalise our understanding and also sharpen our “tools” for decision-making. So, the forum is for YOU!
Thank you. The coordinator reserves the right to moderate the comments, where necessary.
