Listening Inn – Ministry of Simon & Rinda on Retreat Work

I have not seen Pastor Simon for a long time and today, I managed to catch up with him over the phone and discovered our dear friend has gone full swing into retreat works. I always knew that this would be the eventual direction he and his wife would take. Somehow this still comes as a pleasant discovery to that there is another channel we can direct people to when they need some space to make a retreat.

You can always check them out on their site – listeninginn.org

They conduct retreats both in Singapore and out of Singapore.

How Do I Pray?

“Great is the mystery of the faith!” The Church professes this mystery in the Apostles’ Creed and celebrates it in the sacramental liturgy, so that the life of the faithful may be conformed to Christ in the Holy Spirit to the glory of God the Father. This mystery, then, requires that the faithful believe in it, that they celebrate it, and that they live from it in a vital and personal relationship with the living and true God.
This relationship is prayer.

- The Cathechism of the Catholic Church Pt IV, §1

But how does one begin to build a life of prayer? Here are some books to teach, inform and inspire you, and eventually lead you to build an authentic life of prayer.

Opening to God

by Thomas H. Green, SJ

For over thirty years, Opening to God has de-mystified prayer for countless thousands. This direct and appealing guide explains what prayer is all about, then turns to the techniques that ready the soul to encounter God. Jesuit missionary and spiritual director Thomas Green, S.J. banishes stodgy assumptions about spiritual life that is fed by the practice of prayer. A must-have resource, both for beginners and practiced ‘pray-ers’ who want to cultivate a more meaningful prayer experience.

Recommendation:

In this book, Thomas Green lays the foundation of what prayer is really about, and how we might be able to pray in truth and in spirit; opening our eyes not only to God and his Creation, but also to ourselves. Highly recommended to all seeking to deepen their prayer lives! Many of us pray, but are we really praying?

God of Surprises

by Gerard W. Hughes, SJ

Jesus said: ”The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field.” This book has only one purpose: to suggest ways of finding the treasure in what we may consider a most unlikely field – ourselves. It is a guide book to the inner journey in which we are all engaged and has much to say to those who have a love/hate relationship with the Church to which they belong or once belonged.

Recommendation:

As the description above relates, this book is designed as a guidebook for a journey – a journey that moves progressively inwards. Though twelve engaging chapters, Gerard Hughes takes the reader deeper and deeper into a spiritual journey that seeks out the ultimate treasure – Christ himself. At the end of each chapter are exercises designed to help the reader in his or her own journey towards a deeper spiritual awareness and relationship with God.

Landmarks: An Ignatian Journey

by Margaret Silf; Foreword by Gerard W. Hughes, SJ

Landmarks help us to find ourselves when we think we are lost. When we don’t know where to begin, they give us a starting point. When we think we know where we are, they give us confidence to keep going. And if we think we have arrived, they remind us that there is always something more, somewhere beyond.

This is a book of landmarks for the heart’s journey. Written out of the author’s own prayer and lived experience, and inspired by her practical explorations of the insight of St Ignatius Loyola, it opens up questions which concern us all. How can we recognise God’s ceaseless action in our lives and begin to discern his will? What does ‘fallenness’ mean for us today? How can we live true to ourselves and make decisions in freedom? How we do penetrate our deepest desires and become free of the lesser attachments that obstruct them? Big questions – but as Margaret Silf shows, there are clues to be discovered in every moment and situation: at home, at work, in the garden, in the market, in the bath!

Landmarks will help us discover and deepen our own individual journeys. Written for both groups and individuals, it is illustrated with drawings and diagrams, and contains exercises and suggestions for prayer and reflection. Be warned, however. Landmarks are not for armchair pilgrims. They are for the People of the Way.

Recommendation:

Margaret Silf’s “guidebook” to deeper prayer and spiritual life prompts and informs the reader with its calm and personal voice; the book also colourfully illustrates its intentions and advice via sketches and useful and easy-to-understand metaphors. Silf herself constantly refers to Scripture throughout the book, drawing from the wisdom and stories of the Bible in order to illustrate and explain our own experiences with God and prayer. A book that is enjoyable and accessible, while retaining profound spiritual wisdom. Recommended for all!

Franciscan Prayer

by Ilia Delio, O.S.F.

Masterfully written and intensely enlightening, Franciscan Prayer could very well be considered the essential handbook for all those seeking to pray and live the Franciscan way. With exquisite execution, Franciscan theologian Ilia Delio clearly outlines what it means to pray as a Franciscan. Through her experience as a discalced Carmelite nun and then her transformation into Franciscan scholar, Sister Delio brings to light the “contemplative,” “cosmic” and “evangelizing” aspects of Franciscan prayer. Everyone, says Delio, seems to know about Francis’ life, his miracles, his devotion to evangelization and his dedication to living a simple and humble life, yet few know about his prayer life, which seemed, over the centuries, to get lost in the paper shuffle between theologians, followers and historical biographers.

It is through Clare of Assisi, Delio asserts, that we have insights into the Franciscan path of prayer. “Clare provides the ‘road-map’ of prayer for evangelical life . . . she was able to do this because she lived under monastic rule while ardently desiring evangelical life.” Through Clare’s letters and actions, we find the rudiments of Franciscan prayer: ”Gaze-Consider-Contemplate-Imitate.” Delio also uses the insights of Saint Bonaventure as well as Saint Francis to fully show the meaning and purpose of prayer in the Franciscan tradition.

Recommendation:

From its very first pages, Sr. Delio explains how Franciscan prayer emerges from the Franciscan understanding of God and Creation. Franciscan prayer – according to Delio, for example – is dynamic, because it is about participating in the mystical body of Christ, who is according to Franciscan theology, inseparable from the Trinity; hence, to pray in the Franciscan tradition is to enter into the mystery of the Trinity itself, and to live in the Trinity is to live in relationships of love, relationships which are indeed, dynamic. This book is highly recommended for those who are interested in knowing about and cultivating a Franciscan tradition of prayer.

Centering Prayer: Renewing an Ancient Christian Prayer Form

by M. Basil Pennington, O.C.S.O.

The practice of prayer and meditation in modern Western Christianity is rooted in the Eastern traditions of early Church prayer as well as the wisdom of early Church fathers. In Centering Prayer, M. Basil Pennington, the author of the highly acclaimed Daily We Touch Him, returns to these roots, offering contemporary Christians a new approach to ancient prayer forms.

Pennington combines the best of the Eastern spiritual exercises (such as the Jesus Prayer) with a spirituality for today’s world. Addressing the obstacles that discourage people from praying well, he explains how to relax for prayer, how to listen to and be directed by the Other, and how to handle the pain and distractions that can stifle attempts to communicate with God. Centering Prayer has sold more than a quarter million copies since it was first published in 1982. In this eminently practical book, simple, inspiring instructions will help readers find the comfort and the guidance they seek through prayer.

Recommendation:

In this book, Basil Pennington brings to us a form of prayer practised by those in the monastic life throughout Western Christianity. Briefly explaining its historical roots in the Desert Fathers of the early Eastern Church in Syria and Egypt, Pennington goes on to explain Centering Prayer while guiding readers with practical steps and advice on taking their first steps towards this. Practical advice for any form of prayer, this book guides you into learning how to still you heart and mind in a world of distractions. Recommended for all.

Fire Within: St Teresa of Avila, St John of the Cross, and the Gospel on Prayer

by Thomas Dubay, S.M.

Fr. Thomas Dubay spends a number of months every year giving conferences and retreats to religious, particularly the contemplative Carmelites. This book is the fruit of many years of his study and experience in spiritual direction, and in it he synthesizes the teachings on prayer of the two great doctors of the Church on prayer – St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila – and the teaching of Sacred Scripture.

But the writings of St. Teresa and St. John of the Cross, which Fr. Dubay has synthesized, are not only for contemplatives. These teachings are based on the Gospel imperative of personal prayer and the call to holiness and they are meant for every Christian. Here is an outstanding book on prayer and the spiritual life, written by one of the best spiritual directors and retreat masters of our time and based on the writings of two of the greatest mystical doctors of the Church.

“This book is a gold mine for any Christian intent on making progress in prayer. Any reader who appreciates the relevance of the spiritual in these troubled times will find Fire Within difficult to put down. A work of art by a master of the spiritual life.”

- Fr. Benedict Groeschel, C.F.R., author of Arise from Darkness

Recommendation:

In comparison to the other books recommended here, Fr. Dubay’s book takes it’s place in the heavyweight category of spiritual writing. A book that draws upon the Gospel, the writings of two great mystics and Doctors of the Church, as well as Fr Dubay’s own experiences in spiritual direction, the reader can expect to encounter passages exploring topics of detachment, summits, contemplation, locutions and visions within these profound pages. Fr. Dubay’s exquisite use of expression in prose illuminates these passages for the advanced reader and pray-er. A work of a world-class spiritual director, it is recommended for advanced readers and those interested in the area of prayer and spiritual direction.

St Francis of Assisi and His Way of Life

St Francis of Assisi was a Catholic deacon and founder of the Order of Friars Minor, better known today as ‘Franciscans’. He is renowned for his love for the poor and his regard for animals as being part of the ‘brotherhood of creation’. He is the patron saint of animals, amongst other things, and his feast day is on October 4.
Here are several books written about the life of St Francis, each suitable for different ages and tastes.

The Joyful Beggar: A Novel about St Francis of Assisi

by Louis de Wohl

In this magnificent and stirring novel, Louis de Wohl turns his famed narrative skill to the story of the soldier and merchant’s son who might have been the right-hand man to a king… and who became instead the most beloved of all saints. The story teems with action, pageantry and intrigue with finely conceived characters – the beautiful, saintly Clare, Frederick, the hawk-faced King of Sicily and the Holy Roman Emperor, the Sultan Al Kamil, Pope Innocent III… The scene shifts from Assisi, Rome and Sicily to the deadly sands of Egypt.

This book was made into a feature film entitled Francis of Assisi by 20th Century Fox, and is now available on video from Ignatius Press.

“A sweeping, evocative historical novel that vividly recreates the thirteenth century as de Wohl stirringly chronicales the journey of Francis from soldier to mystic, a spiritual quest fraught with signficance for the modern reader.”

- Robert Waldron, author of Hound of Heaven at My Heels

Recommendation: This novel is suitably recommended for those looking for an enjoyable and intimate rendering of the life of St Francis. Louis de Wohl balances the demands of an imaginative narrative with a disciplined regard for historical accuracy in order to recreate the celebrated life of St Francis. Being a hagiographical account, this novel is not recommended for those seeking a more serious study of the saint and his life. Suitable for adults and youth alike.

Saint Francis of Assisi

by Ivan Gobry, Ph.D.

He has inspired countless films, paintings, poems and novels. But who was Francesco Bernadone, now known as Saint Francis of Assisi? Despite the wealth of writing on the life of this great saint, many still don’t know the man. They know the legend: a Francis made palatable to modern sensibilities—the happy friar who carols to the birds and writes poems to the sun and moon. This is the image of the saint that is usually presented, even though it fails to encompass the true personality of Francis.

Ivan Gobry, Ph.D., takes on the task of revealing the real man, the man who abandoned wealth and chose to live a beggar’s life. Saint Francis lived a life that was full of danger and adventure, ministering to lepers and even traveling to Egypt in an attempt to convert the Muslims. Disciples flocked to him, drawn by the radical challenge of living the Gospel in a world that had become attracted to decadence. Francis rejoiced in nature and animals, but also fought spiritual battles against temptation and vice. Dr. Gobry restores a profoundly human dimension to the Little Poor Man of Assisi: a far cry from the image that has become conventional.

Ivan Gobry, Ph.D., a specialist in the medieval period and professor emeritus at the University of Rheims, is the author of a great number of studies on the Middle Ages and philosophy. He is considered to be one of the foremost experts on Saint Francis.

Recommendation: This book is a must-have for those searching for a solid and detailed account of the Saint’s life. In separating the man from the legend, Professor Gobry pieces together the real life of Saint Francis from the past 500 years of scholarship, and presents it to today’s reader in a continuous and easy-to-read chronological narrative. Especially recommended for adults interested in discovering the real life of Saint Francis.

Helen Walker Homan’s book draws upon established biographical accounts of the two great saints of Assisi in order to present their lives in a way suitable for children between the ages of 11-13. As told in twelve easy-to-read chapters, the lives of Saint Francis and Clare are brought to life in colourful reimaginings of true events. The Lessons of St Francis: How to Bring Simplicity and Spirituality Into Your Daily Life

by John Michael Talbot

Well-known Christian musician Talbot founded the Brothers and Sisters of Charity, a Franciscan lay order. Here he discusses their way of life, which is based on the ideals of simplicity, service, and love for creation that St. Francis of Assisi inpired. Drawing on insights from the saint’s enigmatic life, Talbot encourages readers to pare down the overwhelming demands of modern existence and to distinguish between the needs of interior life and the pull of worldly desires.

Readable and filled with concrete suggestions, this is sure to appeal to seekers of a more simple and authentic life.

Recommendation: This book goes one step further than the other books recommended here; John Michael Talbot, in this book on spirituality, draws upon lessons from the life of Saint Francis and shows us how the life of this thirteenth century saint can offer guidance in our own paths to holiness. Recommended especially for those inspired by the life of this great saint.

Following Francis: The Franciscan Way for Everybody by Susan Pritchford

Organized round the Rule of St. Francis, this book is a wonderful resource for private devotion or group study as it shows readers what it means to live out the Christian life with a Franciscan accent.

In a little town in Italy, nearly eight hundred years ago, Francis of Assisi renounced everything he owned to follow Christ with passionate and single-minded abandon. Even today, centuries later, this simple saint draws people around the world to his story of living in humility, love, and joy. Here in Following Francis, Susan Pitchford tells her own story of the Franciscan life, as a member of the Third Order, founded by Francis himself so that people from all walks of life can follow the saint’s ideal, without leaving their homes or occupations.

Pitchford learned that the Franciscan tradition isn’t the exclusive possession of monks cloistered in a monastery, but a spiritual path for ordinary people living in the twenty-first century.

Spirituality Books from Gerald G. May

Gerald G. May, M.D. (1940-2005), practiced medicine and psychiatry for twenty-five years before becoming a senior fellow in contemplative theology and psychology at the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation in Bethesda, Maryland. He was the author of many books and articles blending spirituality and psychology, including Addiction and Grace, Care of Mind/Care of Spirit, Will and Spirit, and The Dark Night of the Soul.

Addiction and Grace: Love and Spirituality in the Healing of Addictions

by Gerald G. May

In this inspiring book, Gerald May describes the processes of attachment that lead to addiction and examines the relationship between addiction and spiritual awareness. May details the various addictions from which we suffer – not only to alcohol and drugs, but also to work, sex, performance, responsibility, and intimacy.

Drawing on his experience as a psychiatrist working with the chemically dependent, May emphasizes how addiction represents a doomed attempt to assert complete control over our lives. Addiction & Grace is a compassionate and wise treatment of this important topic, offering a critical yet hopeful guide to a place of freedom based on contemplative spirituality. This Plus edition includes two additional essays by Gerald May not included in the hardcover version.

The Dark Night of the Soul:

A Psychiatrist Explores the Connection Between Darkness and Spiritual Growth

by Gerald G. May

Now in paperback: a distinguished psychiatrist, spiritual counsellor and bestselling author shows how the dark sides of the spiritual life are a vital ingredient in deep, authentic, healthy spirituality.

Gerald G. May, MD, one of the great spiritual teachers and writers of our time, argues that the dark ‘shadow’ side of the true spiritual life has been trivialised and neglected to our serious detriment. Superficial and naively upbeat spirituality does not heal and enrich the soul. Nor does the other tendency to relegate deep spiritual growth to only mystics and saints. Only the honest, sometimes difficult encounters with what Christian spirituality has called and described in helpful detail as ‘the dark night of the soul’ can lead to true spiritual wholeness.

May emphasises that the dark night is not necessarily a time of suffering and near despair, but a time of deep transition, a search for new orientation when things are clouded and full of mystery. The dark gives depth, dimension and fullness to the spiritual life.

Care of Mind, Care of Spirit

by Gerald G. May

Although secular psychology addressed a great deal about how we come to be the way we are and how we might live more efficiently, it can offer nothing in terms of why we exist or how we should use our lives,” writes Gerald May in this classic discussion of the nature of contemporary spiritual guidance and its relationship to counseling and psychiatry. For millions turning for answers to the world of the spirit, May shows how psychiatry and spiritual direction are alike, how they complement one another, and how they ultimately diverge.

The Wisdom of Wilderness: Experiencing the Healing Power of Nature

by Gerald G. May

The natural world has a power to inspire the best and soothe the worst in each of us. It also has much to teach us about the wilderness within and the divine presence that is manifest in nature. In this, his last work, beloved author Gerald May offers a memoir and spiritual guide that reveals the great lessons available to us when we retreat from our busy lives to the serenity of the natural wilderness.

The Wisdom of Wilderness expresses the healing and wholeness May received through spending time in the wild — whether hiking, camping, canoeing, fishing, or, often, just sitting. Also, May saw that wilderness can be found anywhere — a garden, a park, perhaps in one’s own room, or even in other people. Wherever we find it, it calls to what is natural in each of our hearts, reassuring us that we are part of a bigger creation and teaching us how to make peace with the outer world and with our inner selves.

For May, nature was not something to rise above. The belief that we must dominate and tame all that is wild around and within us is the most fundamental estrangement of Western civilization, long inflicting wounds upon the planet and upon ourselves. But before we can effectively heal the earth, we must somehow recover our own natural wholeness, our own wildness and kinship with nature. We cannot do this healing for ourselves, but only through “the grace of Something or Someone beyond” — and in May’s case, he found this grace in Nature itself.

This moving, beautifully written book is Gerald May at his best. It includes a foreword by author Parker J. Palmer, which illuminates the importance of May’s life and writing and explains how this last book fits intothe body of his work.

Will and Spirit: A Contemplative Psychology

by Gerald G. May

“The opening chapter of Gerry May’s Will and Spirit is alone worth the price of the book. The distinction he draws between wilfulness and willingness is crucial for us as individuals, as a nation, and as a race.”

- M. Scott Peck, author of The Road Less Travelled

“A rich book covering many areas of human experience upon which contemplative spirituality can be based . . . For the person looking for an intelligent and clear presentation of the relationship between psychological and spiritual growth, this is the book to read.”

Blending her own experiences with an intimate grasp of spirituality, Sue Monk Kidd relates the passionate and moving tale of her spirtual crisis, when life seemed to have lost meaning and her longing for a hasty escape from the pain yielded to a discipline of “active waiting”. This PLUS edition includes a reader’s guide.

“What a joy! Sue Monk Kidd combines profound wisdom in a most readable and anecdotal style. Like Einstein, she shows us that great truth is also “simple and beautiful”. When the Heart Waits is just that!”

Firstlight: The Early Inspirational Writings

by Sue Monk Kidd

Before she won an international readership with her novels, Sue Monk Kidd was best known for her smart, passionate spiritual writings. Now many of those early stories and essays (most of which first appeared in Guideposts) are collected in one volume, organized around thirteen spiritual motifs. In Firstlight, Kidd charts her emergence as a writer and seeker; reflects on her roles as wife, mother, daughter, nurse, and artist; and assesses what she has learned in settings as far-flung as Africa and her own home. The result is an intimate, uplifting book, filled with moments of recognition and discovery.

Lectio Divina – Praying with Scriptures – An Ancient Method

I would like in particular to recall and recommend the ancient tradition of Lectio divina: the diligent reading of Sacred Scripture accompanied by prayer brings about that intimate dialogue in which the person reading hears God who is speaking, and in praying, responds to him with trusting openness of heart (cf. Dei Verbum, n. 25). If it is effectively promoted, this practice will bring to the Church – I am convinced of it – a new spiritual springtime.

- Pope Benedict XVI, 16 Sept 2005

Lectio Divina is Latin for “divine reading”, and is a popular form of Catholic prayer amongst religious and lay people alike.

How To Pray With the Bible: The Ancient Prayer Form of Lectio Divina Made Simple

by Karl A. Schultz

Praying with the Bible is an active dialogue with God through which we may be taught, healed and transformed. It is God and the praying person communicating and offering themselves to each other.

Learn an ancient prayer technique known as lectio divina – a simple, natural rhythm of reading and reflection that can be used for individual or family prayer, Bible study, or small faith-sharing groups.

Lectio, or “holy reading”, is well-known to monks and nuns, but it actually began with and is equally appropriate for laypersons. Acclaimed author and retreat leader Karl A. Schultz, author of eight related books, will teach you an intuitive way to use this process for the Liturgy of the Hours, the Rosary, the Stations of the Cross, the Mass, modern papal encyclicals, spiritual classics, journalling, and stress management.

This book is not only about how to pray with the Bible, but how to bring it to life using your own experience, which contributes significantly to a meaningful encounter with God’s Word.

Praying Scripture for a Change: An Introduction to Lectio Divina

by Dr. Tim Gray

As St Augustine notes, “When we pray, we speak to God; when we read Scripture, God speaks to us.” The key to enriching our prayer is learning the language of Christianity, and the most effective way to learn this language is an ancient techniquq known as lectio divina (“divine reading”).

In these pages, you will learn:

- How God speaks directly to each of us in His Word.

- How to overcome the obstacles to a consistent and fruitful prayer life.

- Why the fourfold method of lectio divina leads us directly into the heart of contemplative prayer.

- Strategies for reading and praying the Bible fruitfully.

- What Christian meditation is and how it differs from non-Christian approaches.

- How everyone – not just saints and mystics – can truly reach mystical union with God.

In this succinct book, Catholic theologian and biblical scholar Dr. Tim Gray walks you through the Bible and the wisdom of the saints to reveal the practical steps of this great treasure of our Tradition. Learning the simple steps of lectio divina will provide a practical and effective way for you to enhance your prayer life through the power of God’s Word.

Reading with God: Lectio Divina

by David Foster, OSB

David Foster is a Benedictine Monk of Downside Abbey and chaplain to Downside School. He has always been concerned to bring the riches of the monastic tradition to lay people as they struggle to live the Christian life in the modern world. Lectio Divina, or the art of spiritual reading, is an art which is all but lost outside monastic communities. Following St Benedict’s opening command in his Rule to ‘listen’ – attending to the word of God through the printed text – is an art which needs to be rediscovered in a world in which we are surrounded by a cacophony of sound and noise. David Foster has written a masterly guide to this art.

This work is a practical handbook for beginners to introduce them to the practice of lectio divina, sharing this monastic method with all interested lay-people.

Lectio Divina: Renewing the Ancient Practice of Praying the Scriptures

by M. Basil Pennington

This informative and practical guidebook for today’s Christian describes the time-tested method of praying with the Scriptures for wisdom and guidance and joy. Father Basil Pennington defines Lectio Divina as the art of letting God, our Divine Friend, speak to us through his inspired Word. But more than that, lectio also involves our response to the Word received: it is a two-way communication. This method and discipline is universal in application and has been practiced by monastics and other Christians for over a thousand years.

Notes from Wellsprings on Decision Making & Retreat

Notes from Peter .. I found these two books to be extremely useful.

It is easy to make choices between good and bad, good and evil. However, it is extremely difficult to decide when the choices presented before you are all good. How shall one proceed to make an informed and discerned choice among the good ones.

We often turn to God when we are at crossroads. The milestones of our lives are at times riddled with bad decisions that leave us helpless. More often than not, God is silent. Or even He is speaking, we are not listening nor equipped to listen.

How then do I make a choice based not on which side of the bed I get up from in the morning but a systematic test-proved Spirit-filled method?

Ignatius of Loyola has discovered a way and the method he taught is time-tested and time-proved over 450 years. The Jesuit form of discernment enables us with a tool, a way to make decision in the face of difficult choices, based on a life of prayer.

Many people who came to Wellsprings looking for books to satisfy their restless hearts and most do not even know the reason for their being. This restlessness manifests itself in our relentless search to fill our cup with activities that do not satisfy.

“I DON’T LIKE MY JOB”, “I HATE MY MY BOSS”, “HELP! I AM STUCK IN A BAD RELATIONSHIP”, “WHERE DO I GO NOW?” are some of the cries that I hear. At the root, we are at crossroads, not knowing which direction to head for, wanting someone to lead us or even to push us, yet we are reluctant to let go and let God. Our past is present.

New from Georgetown University!

Since the Second Vatican Council, the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola have been the subject of extensive research leading to a renewal of the way the Spiritual Exercises are practiced.
